Free Family Entertainment – Platt Brothers Concert at New Children’s Museum

Saturday, November 19, 2011 – Free, Family Friendly Concert in the Museum’s Park

Get ready for some fun-filled entertainment for the entire family this Saturday, November 19, 2011! Hosted by the San Diego New Children’s Museum, this free and family friendly event, dubbed “The Platt Party” features the entertaining antics of the Platt Brothers. If you got a glimpse of The Platt Brothers and their energizing performance at the Museum’s Block Party, then you know why this group has been invited back for a full-scale celebration. Kids and families can also rock out with a live DJ and get their faces painted for free during this event.

About the Platt Brothers: The Platt Brothers are real-life brothers whose comedic dance and acrobatics have taken them from local San Diego stages to tours across the US, and internationally broadcast performances with Cirque du Soleil, America’s Got Talent, and the Chabad Telethon. Their spirited performances and workshops stress the importance of imagination, physical activity, and healthy lifestyles.

The San Diego New Children’s Museum’s Platt Party free children’s concert takes place on Saturday, November 19, 2011 from 12:00 pm (noon) to 4:00 pm in the Park across from the San Diego New Children’s Museum (located at 200 West Island Avenue) in Downtown San Diego and is easily accessible from the MTS Convention Center Trolley stop, Seaport Village and the Gaslamp Quarter. This is a free, family friendly event.

Encinitas Fall Festival 2011 – Free, Family Friendly Event

Sunday, November 20, 2011 – Street Fair Includes Shopping and Entertainment

Every November for two decades, the Downtown Encinitas Main Street Association has played host to a premier Street Fair – The Fall Festival. This free, family friendly Festival, previously known as the Poinsettia Festival, is a ready-made bazaar for holiday shoppers and weekend fun seekers. This year, on Sunday, November 20, 2011 fair-goers will enjoy a day where coastal breezes meet people gathering to shop, eat, be entertained and enjoy the community’s Historical district. The Festival will feature over 450 vendor booths showcasing various arts, crafts, gifts, food and more. The 200 shops and 40 restaurants and eateries along the Coast Highway from D to J Streets will be open and ready for business. Live music will be playing at two venues: The Lumberyard Courtyard Stage (located at The Lumberyard) and the Community Stage (close to F Street). Both stages will feature the best in local entertainment.

Free Parking at the Encinitas Fall Festival:

 The Coast Highway 101 will be closed from D Street to J Street starting at 6:00 am, however many parking facilities will be available for the event within a short walking distance: Moonlight Beach Parking Lot; City Hall Parking Lot on Vulcan Avenue; NCTD Coaster Station Lots at D or E Streets and Vulcan Avenue. There is also free parking now available at Lot B on the corner of E Street and Vulcan Avenue.

Mitsubishi Motors North America announced that the all new 100% electric 2012 Mitsubishi i is embarking on a tour of the Pacific Northwest and California. The Encinitas Fall Festival has been chosen as one of the stops! Bella does indeed survive her honeymoon, but a new complication arises when she discovers that she’s pregnant – and the child is growing at an alarming rate. The pregnancy sets the wolves against Bella and Edward, but Jacob vows to protect his friend. This film is rated PG-13 and opens in theaters across the county on Friday, November 18, 2011.

Kid Friendly Matinee Performances at California Center For the Arts, Escondido

October 2011 to May 2012 – Live, Kid Friendly Theater; All Seats $3.00 Each

Introduce your students to live theater through a series of weekday matinee performances at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Each show is connected to a variety of curriculum areas such as history, literature, science, music, and dance, making this monthly event ideal for all eager students and educators. A standards-based Educators’ Guide is provided at no charge and includes pre and post show activities, historical content and other resources to explore with your students.

All seats at each performance are $3.00 each. Advance reservation with payment is required. To reserve your tickets, call the California Center for the Arts, Escondido Ticket Office at 800.988.4253. The Ticket Office is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Refuge in the Arts: Hip Hop from the Heart of Eveoke – This exciting and interactive hip-hop and spoken word performance not only explores ways to connect students to social issues but offers tools to navigate and transform them! Refuge in the Arts will spark the imagination with exciting choreography that connects hip-hop and other modern and traditional dance forms. The 9:30 am performance is recommended for Grades 2-5; the 11:30 am performance is recommended for Grades 6-12.

The California Center for the Arts, Escondido is located at 340 North Escondido Boulevard, Escondido, CA. The Weekday Matinees for Youth initiative is part of the Center’s Education mandate. Put on your costume and celebrate Halloween in Balboa Park at the 3rd Annual Balboa Park Halloween Family Day on Saturday, October 29, 2011. Over a dozen museums are treating families to free admission for children 12 and under during this family friendly event. In addition to free children’s admission with a paid adult, participating museums and cultural attractions will present a spooky array of hands-on activities, crafts, special tours, storytelling, and other free goodies from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Adults also receive discounted admission when they pick up a Stay-for-the-Day Pass, a one-day excursion pass allowing one adult admission to five park museums for a low price of $35.00.

Among the highlights of this year’s park-wide Halloween Family Day is a doggie costume contest at the Spanish Village Art Center, a Great Pumpkin parachute drop at the San Diego Air & Space Museum, a creepy nocturnal Critter Cavern at the Natural History Museum, a dance performance by Ballet Folklorico Xochitl at the Mingei Museum and activities that explore local cemeteries and gravestones at the San Diego History Center.

  • Japanese Friendship Garden: An interactive scavenger hunt will teach families about Japanese culture and gardening. Stay for lunch as the Chop Soo-ey food truck, featuring the creations of San Diego’s celebrity chef, Deborah Scott, will be parked in the Garden.
  • Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre: Free puppet making for all kids accompanied by an adult at 11:45 am and 1:45 pm; show ticket not required.
  • Mingei International Museum: Take part in a skull-making craft activity with Amalia Menchaca and a dance performance by Ballet Folklorico Xochitl at 1:00 pm, in collaboration with the House of Mexico.
  • Reuben H. Fleet Science Center: Participate in toddler-themed (ages 5 and under) activities at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm in the Kid City exhibition; discounted IMAX admission all day (regular admission applies to accompanying parents).
  • San Diego Air & Space Museum: Make Great Pumpkin parachutes in preparation for the pumpkin drop off of the museum roof at 2:30 pm; enjoy kid-friendly 3-D films. Special admission price of $5.00 to see the Space Exhibition.
  • San Diego Automotive Museum: Discover your inner (scary) car designer with ghost car coloring sheets in the Children’s Art Gallery.
  • San Diego Hall of Champions: Children 12 and under free with paid adult.
  • San Diego History Center: Explore gravestone symbols from San Diego’s historic cemeteries, read epitaphs, and design creative funerary art for the future. Learn the history of various local cemeteries.
  • San Diego Model Railroad Museum: Make haunted train trick-or-treat bags and enjoy a Thomas the Tank Engine bounce house. Treats provided for all children.
  • San Diego Museum of Art: Children 12 and under free with paid adult. The SDMA Sculpture Court Café by Giuseppe will offer a warm apple cider station with candy for the kids, while quantities last.
  • San Diego Museum of Man: Learn about Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, with local artist and expert Mary Lou Valencia! Make a calavera mask and learn about sugar skulls, or make a paper flower to honor friendly spirits! Sample authentic “Bread of the Dead” and hot chocolate. Explore the museum with a spooky tour of our mummy collection, presented in ghostly rhyme!
  • San Diego Natural History Museum: Grab a flashlight and visit the Critter Cavern to learn about bats and other nocturnal creatures, meet the staff animal expert and join in a costume parade lead by Ms. Frizzle at 2:30 pm! Take part in hands-on activities and create crafts to take home.
  • San Diego Zoo: Free admission to all children through 11 years of age, regardless of adult ticket purchase as part of Kids Free Days promotion.
  • Spanish Village: Doggie Costume Contest beginning at 1:00 pm. Doggie treats for the winners and first place receives a $25.00 Spanish Village Gift Certificate. Also, free art activities, including trick-or-treat bag decorating, trick-or-treating at the studios, entertainment, art and food booths.
  • The Old Globe: The Old Globe’s popular class for children, Theatre Tots, will take place at 10:00 am in Hattox Hall at the Karen and Donald Cohn Education Center. Theatre Tots is a Creative Dramatics program for children ages 4, 5 and 6. This ninety-minute session takes children from storybook to performance while they learn how to use their voices, bodies and imaginations to bring a story to life.   • Timken Museum of Art: Revel in ghostly giggles at a Family Storytelling at 11:00 am that will give ages five and up “just the teeniest bit of shiver.”
  • UNA International Gift Shop: Pick up a Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF box for kids to take along with them as they go trick-or-treating this Halloween. The money they collect will be sent to UNICEF to help children around the world who need clean water, food, school supplies, etc. One free flag per family while supplies last.

  • Balboa Park Online Collaborative: See the Park’s exciting new technology-related projects, including mobile apps and a forthcoming online library featuring content from 20 Balboa Park cultural institutions.
  • Marston House: Mask making and coloring. Receive a vintage, c. 1900 style, treat bag full of various goodies, including coupons and candy (while supplies last).
  • San Diego Civic Youth Ballet: Information on upcoming programs including The Nutcracker.
  • SDG&E: Learn how to slay energy vampires in your home. Free workbooks for kids with energy-saving tips and information about other SDG&E programs and services.
  • San Diego Natural History Museum: Hands-on activity; information on upcoming programs.
  • San Diego Youth Symphony: Performances by student musicians; raffle give-away; musical petting zoo – students will demonstrate and teach visitors how to play an instrument; information on concert season, membership, and community programs.
  • San Diego Zoo: Pins, decals, magazines and Halloween candy will be handed out to everyone. Zoo animals at the booth.

Halloween Family Day 2011 takes place on Saturday, October 29, 2011 in San Diego’s Balboa Park. This family friendly event is open to the public. Costumes are encouraged.
