June 25 – September 5, 2011 – San Diego Zoo Comes Alive During Nighttime Zoo
Long summer days mean more time for fun at the San Diego Zoo. Beginning June 25, 2011 and continuing through Labor Day, September 5, 2011, the Zoo will be open from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm.
The theme of this year’s Nighttime Zoo celebration is China Celebration. To mark the event, the Zoo is welcoming Chinese acrobats, adding a new animal show and hosting a troop of robotic actors. The Zoo will also debut a new exhibit for its northern Chinese leopard.
Here are some of the fun events, shows and activities guest can expect this summer at the San Diego Zoo:
- The Hunte Amphitheater will be the summer home for the Golden Lion Chinese Acrobats. The troop hails from China’s Hebei Provence and will perform Tales of the Mandarin Forest a show featuring acrobats, dancers, martial artists, and musicians and has a timeless appeal that crosses all ages.
- Re-opening just in time for Nighttime Zoo, the renovated Wegeforth Bowl will debut Camp Critters. During the show, Harry the sea lion is joined on stage by several animal species to help train new camp counselors; come out and see if audience members can earn their camp counselor badge!
- Making its debut at Nighttime Zoo, Steam Powered Giraffe combines the visual of robot pantomime with sketches, pop culture references, improvised comedic dialogue, and original music.
- The Zoo’s northern Chinese leopard (listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature) will have a new home in Africa Rocks. The new cat exhibit features an extensive climbing structure built with trees found on Zoo grounds and large boulders that will be heated for the cool San Diego nights.
- Front Street Plaza will be filled with music from the Surfin’ Safari Bush Band for the ever-popular hula hoop contest; Dancin’ through the Decades will have participants and spectators dancing to a montage of 30 songs from different eras.
- To help you navigate the Zoo at night, Professor Fred Featherstone, our most experienced adventurer, will be stationed in Asian Passage to greet and guide guests to make sure everyone’s trip is a success.
- But while you’re traveling from exhibit to exhibit, keep a look out for some really tall monkeys. Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, is a monkey born from a stone who acquires supernatural powers through Taoist practices. Although he possesses immense strength, is superbly fast, and can transform into 72 various animals and objects, he is still mortal and is relentlessly pursued by foes, as each of his hairs has magical properties. He also has many loyal followers, and you will meet such a trio as you wander through Asian Passage.
- Near the Urban Jungle area of the Zoo, behind Sydney’s Grill, the story of the Princess and the Frog will be told by the Jasmine and Jade Jumpers on a trampoline.
- Balancing and beauty are married in an acrobats showing strength and amazing aerial agility near the Skyfari Pool on Front Street.
- And when guests are finally ready to call it a day, there’s an entertainment extravaganza waiting for them on Front Street! Each night of Nighttime Zoo, between 8:00 pm and 8:30 pm, all the acrobats, stiltwalkers, musicians and greeters from around the Zoo will gather for a San Diego Zoo send-off!
The San Diego Zoo’s Nighttime Zoo celebration takes place June 25, 2011 to Labor Day, September 5, 2011. During these summer months, the Zoo will be open from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm.
