July 22 – September 9, 2009 : Fabulous, Free Concerts at the Del Mar Races

Del Mar Races Logo - Del Mar Races 2009 - Cool As Ever - Copyright Del Mar RacesWhile the main attraction at the Del Mar Races is, of course, the world renowned Thoroughbred Horse Racing Competition (including a million dollar purse for the winner of the Pacific Classic race on Sunday, September 6, 2009); more and more people are heading to the Del Mar Racetrack to enjoy the events that take place after the races, including the Del Mar Summer Concert Series and the 3 O’ Clock Fridays (formerly 4 O’ Clock Fridays) Concerts.

With top bands and world renowned artists taking the stage, it’s easy to understand why the horses are getting a run for their money!

Here is a list of concerts and entertainment scheduled for the 2009 Del Mar Races season:

3 O’ Clock Fridays (formerly 4 O’ Clock Fridays):

New start time, new name! The 3 O’ Clock Fridays concerts (formerly 4 O’ Clock Fridays) is a great way to kick off the weekend at the Del Mar Races. Head over to the concert stage (located at the Plaza de Mexico) after the last race and enjoy a free concert by some of the hottest bands in the country.

3 O’Clock Fridays concerts are free with paid racetrack admission and begin following the last race (which is scheduled for approximately 7:00 pm). There is no seating for the concerts; it’s standing room only (get there early for the best spots!). And best of all, the concerts are never sold out!

Friday, July 24, 2009:

  • G. Love & Special Sauce – Hip Hop meets the Blues at the 3 O’ Clock Fridays kick off concert…let the good times roll!

Friday, July 31, 2009:

  • The Wailers – Bob Marley and the Wailers brought their reggae music to the world stage in 1971, and the world has embraced their songs and message to this day. The modern day Wailers mix the Jamaican reggae tradition with a modern twist, accompanied by original bassist Aston “Family Man”.

Friday, August 7, 2009:

  • The Airborne Toxic Event – Get ready for Alternative Rock that the LA Times calls “Poetry you can dance to…nothing short of amazing.”

Friday, August 14, 2009:

  • Common Sense – Fun and carefree, Common Sense’s reggae vibe is the essence of Del Mar in the Summer.

Friday, August 21, 2009:

  • Pinback - San Diego’s very own Pinback takes the stage at the Del Mar Races.

  • Super Diamond – Super Diamond is an alternative Neil Diamond tribute band that bridges the gap between young and old, rich and poor, great and small. Join Surreal Neil and Super Diamond as they spread the good word of Neil Diamond.

Friday, September 4, 2009:

  • Pete Yorn – New Jersey native Pete Yorn took a rather unique route to singer/songwriter acclaim, gaining his first big break by providing the score to a Farrelly Brothers film. Four albums later, alternative rocker Pete Yorn rocks the Del Mar Stage.

  • Steel Pulse (Infield Show) – Grammy award winning roots reggae band Steel Pulse brings its message of hope, education and activism to Del Mar.

Sunday, September 6, 2009:

  • Bob Marley Roots Rock Reggae Festival, featuring Ziggy Marley (Infield Show) – Ziggy Marley, son of immortal reggae legend Bob Marley, returns to headline the Roots Reggae Rock Festival at the Del Mar Races. Born in Trench Town, Jamaica, Ziggy Marley was surrounded by the sights and sounds of his father during his studio sessions. He and carries on that legacy, spreading the unifying message of love.

Wednesday, September 9, 2009:

  • Closing Day Party in the Paddock – Stick around and bid the 2009 Del Mar Races season goodbye in style! Entertainment to be announced.

The 2009 Del Mar Races Thoroughbred Horse Racing season takes place from Wednesday, July 22, 2009 to Wednesday, September 9, 2009. There are no races on Mondays and Tuesdays (the Races will be open on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2009). All races take place at the Del Mar Racetrack located at 2260 Jimmy Durante Boulevard, Del Mar, CA, 92014. All concerts are free with paid admission to the Del Mar Races.
