July 22 – September 9, 2009 – Another Season of World-Class Horseracing and Fabulous Entertainment at the Del Mar Races
San Diego’s Del Mar Races celebrates 70 years of horse racing this summer from Wednesday, July 22 to Wednesday, September 9, 2009. The 1937 brainchild of Bing Crosby continues to set industry trends by mixing the excitement of world-class horse racing with fabulous entertainment.
Del Mar Races introduces an adjusted schedule for 2009, with racing to be held Wednesdays through Sundays, and on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2009. To make up for the reduced days, the track will run an additional race on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Also new this season, Four O’Clock Fridays – where top music acts share center stage with thrilling horseracing – will start an hour earlier, as Three O’Clock Fridays.

Wednesday, July 22, 2009 – Opening Day at the Del Mar Races
See and be seen on Opening Day at the Del Mar Races. Be among the 40,000 plus guests who will flock to the racetrack to wager, watch Red Bull skydivers, and be a part of the onsite party. And don’t forget your hat – Opening Day is the day of the One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest!
Thursday, July 23, 2009 – Seniors Days
- Free Stretch Run admission, free official program and free reserved seat for all Seniors 62 and over with ID at designated Stretch Run Admission Gates.
Sunday, July 26, 2009 – Pony Boy Stuffed Animal Giveaway
- Take home your very own “Pony Boy” Del Mar Mascot Plush Toy. Kids will love this adorable 18″ custom-made toy complete with Velcro hooves, for easy attachment to backpacks. Do not miss this unique giveaway, free for children 12 and under.
Saturday, August 1, 2009 – Donut Days
- Head over to the Racetrack for early morning free coffee, orange juice and yummy donuts, as you take a behind-the-scenes look into the world of Thoroughbred racing. Track announcer Trevor Denman will host the festivities which include question and answer sessions with famous jockeys and trainers while watching the horses during their morning workouts. Other activities include face painting, caricatures, and free prizes for the kids.
Saturday, August 29, 2009 – Donut Days
- Head over to the Racetrack for early morning free coffee, orange juice and yummy donuts, as you take a behind-the-scenes look into the world of Thoroughbred racing. Track announcer Trevor Denman will host the festivities which include question and answer sessions with famous jockeys and trainers while watching the horses during their morning workouts. Other activities include face painting, caricatures, and free prizes for the kids.
Saturday, August 1, 2009 – Craft Microbrew Beer Festival and 94.9 Local Music Showcase
- Taste some of the finest handcrafted brews and enjoy live music at this all-new event. Entrance to the event is free with racetrack Stretch Run Admission.
Saturday, August 1, 2009 – Western Regional Chili Cook-off and Salsa Contest
- Spice up your day as red and green chili cooks and salsa entrants compete for over $2,000 in prizes when the Western Regional Chili Cookoff returns to Del Mar. Receive free chili samples from the cooks throughout the day and select your favorites in the People’s Choice category. Winners advance to the World Championships.
Saturday, August 8, 2009 – Long Sleeve Shirt Giveaway
- Get Del Mar’s coolest shirt ever! All fans will receive a stylish 70th-Season long-sleeve commemorative T-shirt. Whether you belly up to the beach bar or take a seat in the cool Pacific Pavilion, head out to the Infield for the all-day party! Immediately following the last race, the outrageously rocking band Flaming Lips will play on the Infield Stage. Don’t miss one of the all-time best live shows! The Beer Fest and Concert are free with admission.
Saturday, August 22, 2009 – Beer Fest and Free Concert

Friday, September 4 to Monday, September 7, 2009 – Pacific Classic Racing
- Saving some of the best racing for last, Labor Day weekend brings the Pacific Classic Racing Festival to the Del Mar Races, featuring 11 Stakes races in 4 days including 4 Grade 1’s! The highlight of the Festival is the 19th running of the $1 million Pacific Classic on Sunday, September 6, 2009. This Grade 1 race features the nation’s top horses competing for a $1 million purse.
Sunday, September 6, 2009 – Bob Marley Roots Rock Reggae Festival, featuring Ziggy Marley
- It’s back! Get there early, this event is always jam-packed!
Monday, September 7, 2009 – Labor Day at the Races
Don’t miss out on the only Monday racing card of the season. Labor Day is also Jockey Photo Day at the Races. Have your picture taken, get an autograph and chat with your favorite jockeys, including Hall of Fame Jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr. – don’t forget your camera!
Wednesday, September 9, 2009 – Closing Day and Party in the Paddock
- The after-the-races send-off features live music and is free to all Closing Day attendees. The Meet’s leading owner, trainer and jockey will be honored.
WEEKLY RECURRING EVENTS:
Newcomers’ Seminar – Daily
- Get all the information you’ll need if you’re new to horse racing at a Newcomers’ Seminar, held daily in front of the Plaza de Mexico stage. The Seminar begins 1 hour prior to the first race (note: there will be two seminars on Opening Day). Learn racing basics, betting strategies, racing tips, money management, selections and more. Attendees will also receive free racing materials with valuable information.
Free and Easy Wednesdays
- Sign up for a free Diamond Club Card and receive free grandstand admission, free reserved seat and half-priced beer, soda and hot dogs in Stretch Run concessions every Wednesday at the Del Mar Races (Opening Day excluded).
Oggi’s Pizza ‘n Ponies Thursdays
- Pick up a Pizza ‘n Ponies Thursdays coupon at Southern California Oggi’s restaurants and present it at Stretch Run Admission Gates on any Thursday for your Pizza ‘n Ponies deal: Stretch Run Admission and program; Stretch Run reserved seating, Oggi’s personal cheese pizza, and a soft drink for $11.00 with coupon from Oggi’s every Thursday.
Diamond Club Seniors Free Admission Thursdays – Every Thursday
- Every Thursday, all Diamond Club Seniors 62 and over receive free Stretch Run admission when they present their cards and ID at designated Stretch Run Admission Gates. To sign up for your free Diamond Club membership, go to the Diamond Club kiosk in front of the Stretch Run Admission Gates.
Three O’Clock Fridays (Formerly Four O’Clock Fridays)
- Racing starts at 3:00 pm every Friday, with a free concert on the Big Stage in Plaza de Mexico after the last race.
Handicapping Seminars – Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays
- Free handicapping seminar featuring a special guest speaker going over the day’s race card. Get unique insight and analysis from top horsemen, handicappers and members of the media.
Daybreak at Del Mar – Every Weekend
- Early risers have a chance to catch morning workouts and breakfast in the Clubhouse Terrace Restaurant every Saturday and Sunday during the 2009 Del Mar Race season. From 7:30 am to 9:30 am, trackside announcer and former jockey Jeff Bloom will provide you behind-the-scenes information while you get an up-close look at many of your favorite horses while they tune up for their next race. There is no charge for admission to the event, but an $8.00 parking fee applies. (Those buying two or more breakfasts will have the parking price deducted off the price of their bill.)
Family Sundays – Every Sunday (except Sunday, September 6, 2009) and Labor Day
- Enjoy a full day of family friendly events in the infield, including Seabiscuit (yes, the one and only), Del Mar Mascot “Pony Boy,” inflatable games and rides, giant scramble slide and obstacle course, pony rides, playground, magic shows, stilt walkers, face painters, game zone and more!
The 2009 Del Mar Races will take place Wednesday through Sunday from Wednesday, July 22, 2009 to Wednesday, September 9, 2009. All races take place at the Del Mar Racetrack located at 2260 Jimmy Durante Boulevard, Del Mar, CA, 92014. Post time for the first race is 2:00 pm (3:00 pm on Fridays).
