World Oceans Day is all about appreciating our oceans and I can think of no better way to teach children to appreciate the ocean than by introducing them to all the wonderful things it has to offer,” said Dirk Westfall, Assistant Curator of Sea Life Aquarium. “Sea Life is designed to be a child’s introduction to the life of the sea, so it really is the best place to take your children to celebrate World Oceans Day.”

On Sunday, June 7, 2009, Sea Life educators will be teaching guests about the “Wear Blue and Tell Two” campaign, an international campaign by The Ocean Project encouraging ocean lovers to wear blue on June 8, which is the official World Oceans Day, and to tell people two things they may not know about the ocean. Wear Blue and Tell Two is the theme for craft project in the Aquarium’s Southern California Touch Pool area all day long.

At 11:45 am, San Diego children’s book author Terry Kraszewski will be in the Sea Life Aquarium’s Lost City of Atlantis area reading her book Surf Angel, which brings children closer to the magical wonders of the sea and encourages them to surf their dreams.  Kraszewski will also be available to sign copies of Surf Angel.

To further enhance their appreciation of the ocean, guests can now experience Sharks Revealed, where guests will learn all about the life cycle and evolution of sharks. The interactive exhibit features more than 40 baby sharks and shows their development from egg to adult. The exhibit also features a graphic timeline showing the evolution of sharks; an interactive “shark lab” where guests can get hands-on experience with shark teeth, jaws and other artifacts and a large-scale model of a “mermaid’s purse” for a fun photo opportunity.

LEGO Sea Life Aquarium celebrates the World’s oceans every day through more than 36 displays including the Shoaling Ring, where guests are surrounded 360 degrees by schools of swimming fish; and the Ray Lagoon where several species of rays appear to “fly” through the water in Mayan temple ruins and the Discovery Zone where new additions include a interactive features such as the trash timeline, wall of promises, an underwater parks building project, and a save the whales display where guests can actually send a postcard to President Obama encouraging legislation to stop whaling.

Sea Life Aquarium at Legoland Resort is located steps away from Legoland California (it shares the same parking lot) at One Legoland Drive, Carlsbad, CA, 92008.

Happy World Oceans Day, San Diego!
