Highlights of New Movies Releasing Summer 2009

Summer is just around the corner, bringing with it lazy days at the beach and sizzling movies on the big screen. Check out this list of Summer Blockbusters – a cinematic who’s who list of sequels, prequels and remakes – coming to a theater near you this Summer:

MAY 2009

May 1, 2009:

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (C)X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Leading up to the events of X-Men, X-Men Origins: Wolverine tells the story of Wolverine’s epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine stars Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Lynn Collins and Ryan Reynolds.

May 8, 2009:

May 15, 2009:

Angels & Demons (C)Angels & Demons – The team behind the global phenomenon The Da Vinci Code returns for the highly anticipated Angels & Demons, based upon the bestselling novel by Dan Brown. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Harvard religious expert Robert Langdon, who once again finds that forces with ancient roots are willing to stop at nothing, even murder, to advance their goals. Ron Howard again directs the film, which is produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and John Calley.

When Langdon discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati – the most powerful underground organization in history - he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organization’s most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. When Langdon learns that the clock is ticking on an unstoppable Illuminati time bomb, he jets to Rome, where he joins forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and enigmatic Italian scientist. May 21, 2009:

Terminator Salvation (C)Terminator Salvation – In the fourth installment of the Terminator series, Christian Bale stars as John Connor, the eventual leader of mankind’s fight against the machines. The year is 2018. Judgment Day has come and gone, leveling modern civilization. An army of Terminators roams the post-apocalyptic landscape, killing or collecting humans where they hide. But small groups of survivors have organized into a Resistance, hiding in underground bunkers and striking when they can against a enemy force that vastly outnumbers them.

Only one man saw Judgment Day coming, one man whose destiny has always been intertwined with the fate of human existence and its war against the computer network Skynet: John Connor (Christian Bale).

Terminator Salvation stars Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin, Bryce Dallas Howard, Moon Bloodgood and Rapper Common.

May 22, 2009 (Memorial Day Weekend):

Night at the Museum 2 : Battle of the SmithsonianNight at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian – When the Museum of Natural History is closed for upgrades and renovations, the museum pieces are moved into federal storage at the famous Washington Museums. Security guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) infiltrates the Smithsonian Institute in order to rescue Jedediah (Owen Wilson) and Octavius (Steve Coogan), who have been shipped to the museum by mistake. The centrepiece of the film will be bringing to life the Smithsonian Institution, which houses the world’s largest museum complex with more than 136 million items in its collections, ranging from the plane Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams) flew on her non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic and Al Capone’s rap sheet and mug shot to Dorothy’s ruby red slippers, Fonzie’s jacket from Happy Days and Archie Bunker’s lounge chair from All in the Family.

Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian stars Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais, and Owen Wilson.

May 29, 2009:

UP (C)Up - From Disney-Pixar comes UP, a comedy adventure in which 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen fulfills his dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America, only to discover that he has brought with him his biggest nightmare, a 9-year-old Wilderness Explorer stowaway.

UP features the voice talent of Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer, John Ratzenberger, Delroy Lindo and Jordan Nagai.

JUNE 2009

June 5, 2009:

Land of the Lost (C)Land of the Lost – Will Ferrell stars as has-been scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, who is sucked into a space-time vortex and spat back through time. Way back. Now, Marshall has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from our world – a place of spectacular sights and super-scaled comedy known as the Land of the Lost.

Sucked alongside him for the adventure are crack-smart research assistant Holly and a redneck survivalist named Will. Chased by T. Rex and stalked by painfully slow reptiles known as Sleestaks, Marshall, Will and Holly must rely on their only ally – a primate called Chaka – to navigate our of the hybrid dimension. Escape from this routine expedition gone awry and they’re heroes. Get stuck, and they’ll be permanent refugees in the Land of the Lost.

Based on the classic television series created by Sid & Mary Krofft, Land of the Lost stars Will Ferrell, Danny McBride, Anna Friel, and Jorma Taccone.

June 24, 2009:

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen (C)Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen – The battle for Earth has ended but the battle for the universe has just begun. After returning to Cybertron, Starscream assumes command of the Decepticons, and has decided to return to Earth with force. The Autobots believing that peace was possible finds out that Megatron’s dead body has been stolen from the US Military by Skorpinox and revives him using his own spark. Now Megatron is back seeking revenge and with Starscream and more Decepticon reinforcements on the way, the Autobots with reinforcements of their own, may have more to deal with than meets the eye.

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen stars Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and Kevin Dunn.

JULY 2009

July 15, 2009:

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (C)Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – In the sixth installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort’s defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friends and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information.

Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn’t counted on Romilda Vane’s chocolates! And then there’s Hermione, simmering with jealously but determined not to show her feelings. As romance blossoms, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same.

Harry Potter 6: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Jim Broadbent.

August 7, 2009:

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (C)G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra – Director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Van Helsing) adapts the beloved Hasbro G.I. Joe toy line with this Paramount Pictures production that pits the Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity against the evil forces of the organization known as Cobra.

Dennis Quaid and Channing Tatum star as General Hawk and Duke Hauser, respectively, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marlon Wayans leading the rest of the cast, including Sienna Miller, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Asian film star Lee Byung-hun.
