Overstock.com, Inc.The Oceanside Museum of Art is pleased to host Free Family Art Day, a program designed to provide the community with educational art experiences. Bring the whole family to this fun-filled free event where children are encouraged to view the artwork featured in the Museum’s Exhibitions (with special kid-friendly docent guided tours at 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm) and participate in hands-on art activities that reflect concepts and themes from the Exhibits. Every Free Family Art Day includes all necessary materials and is open to the public.

There are several Free Family Art Days scheduled for 2009, each one paired with art projects that reflect the themes and concepts of the Exhibits. Here’s a list of the upcoming Free Family Art Day events at the Oceanside Museum of Art (check back for more details closer to the event date):

Sunday, May 3, 2009 – 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm:

Create Wearable Recyclables & Scratch and Sniff Paintings

Design wearable recyclable clothing, build sculptures out of recycled objects and make scented watercolor paintings, inspired by Vortex Plastique, a special one day exhibition organized by artist Peggy Ann Jones that will be on view in the museum lobby.

Through Vortex Plastique, Jones has brought together sculptor Jennifer Miller, as well as friends and students to create sculptures of and about plastic in our lives and our environment. Vortex Plastique is a collaboration with Mira Costa College and is sponsored by the Oceanside Arts Commission. The sculptures include a carpet Jones constructed of approximately 3,420 braided plastic shopping bags over 13 feet in diameter and five life-sized, figurative sculptures constructed of discarded consumer plastics representing themes of environmental concerns.

At the May 2009 Family Art Day, children and adults can learn the art of braiding plastic shopping bags for the construction of a carpet. Anna Dohrman will be on hand to share her special technique and guide a hands-on experience where families can create their own sculpture and clothing from recycled objects. Materials will be provided but you are encouraged to bring your recyclables.
