Hoping to catch a movie this week? Here is a list of new movies opening in San Diego on Friday, January 16, 2009:
Hotel for Dogs - When 16 year old Andi (Emma Roberts) and her younger brother, Bruce (Jake T. Austin), find themselves in a foster home with a strict “no pets” policy, Andi has to use her quick wit to help find a new home for their dog, Friday. The kids stumble upon an abandoned hotel and begin transforming it into the perfect home for Friday – as well as all the strays in the city. This family friendly comedy stars Emma Roberts, Jake T. Austin, Don Cheadle, Johnny Simmons, Kyla Pratt and Lisa Kudrow.
My Bloody Valentine – A re-imagining of the 1981 film which Quentin Tarantino called “the best slasher movie of all time,” My Bloody Valentine is the ultimate horror flick.
Ten years ago, a tragedy changed the town of Harmony forever. Tom Hanniger, an inexperienced coal miner, caused an accident in the tunnels that trapped and killed five men and sent the only survivor, Harry Warden, into a permanent coma. But Harry Warden wanted revenge. Exactly one year later, on Valentine’s Day, he woke up…and brutally murdered twenty-two people with a pickaxe before being killed. Ten years later, Tom Hanniger returns to Harmony on Valentine’s Day, still haunted by the deaths he caused. Struggling to make amends with his past, he grapples with unresolved feelings for his ex-girlfriend, Sarah, who is now married to his best friend, Axel, the town sheriff. But tonight, after years of peace, something from Harmony’s dark past has returned. Wearing a miner’s mask and armed with a pickaxe, an unstoppable killer is on the loose. And as his footsteps come ever closer, Tom, Sarah and Axel realize in terror that it just might be Harry Warden who’s come back to claim them. This horror flick stars Jensen Ackles, Jaime King, Kerr Smith, Edi Gathegi and Tom Atkins.
My Bloody Valentine 3-D - Using the latest dazzling stereographic technology, My Bloody Valentine 3-D takes audiences to the next level; right in the middle of an unprecedented, chilling nightmare.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop - In this comedy, produced by Adam Sandler, Kevin James stars as the title character, Paul Blart, a single, suburban dad, trying to make ends meet as a security officer at a New Jersey mall. It’s a job he takes very seriously, though no one else does. When Santa’s helpers at the mall stage a coup, shutting down the megaplex and taking hostages (Paul’s daughter and sweetheart among them), Jersey’s most formidable mall cop will have to become a real cop to save the day. Paul Blart: Mall Cop stars Kevin James, Jayma Mays, Keir O’Donnell, Bobby Cannavale and Stephen Rannazzisi.
Notorious - Notorious is the story of Christopher Wallace who, through raw talent and sheer determination, transforms himself from a Brooklyn street hustler to become the greatest rapper of all time, THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G. This story charts his meteoric rise to fame and his refusal to succumb to expectation. Produced by Voletta Wallace (BIG’s mother), Wayne Barrowman and Mark Pitts (BIG’s managers), Notorious challenges us all to redefine our notion of what is “The American Dream.” This biopic stars Angela Bassett, Derek Luke, Antonique Smith, Naturi Naughton, Dennis White, Julia Pace Mitchell, and introducing Jamal Woolard as BIG.
Last Chance Harvey (Expands) – In London for his daughter’s wedding, a struggling jingle-writer, Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman), misses his plane to New York, and thus loses his job. While drowning his sorrows in the airport pub, Harvey meets Kate (Emma Thompson), a British government worker stuck in an endless cycle of work, phone calls from her mother, and blind dates. A connection forms between the unhappy pair, who soon find themselves falling in love. This romantic drama stars Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson, Kathy Baker, James Brolin and Eileen Atkins.
Defiance (Expands) – The year is 1941 and the Jews of Eastern Europe are being massacred by the thousands. Managing to escape certain death, three brothers take refuge in the dense surrounding woods they have known since childhood. There they begin their desperate battle against the Nazis. At first it is all they can do to stay alive. But gradually, as whispers of their daring spreads, they begin to attract others – men and women, young and old – willing to risk everything for the sake of even a moment’s freedom. This war drama stars Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, Alexa Davalos and Alan Corduner.
Chandni Chowk to China (Limited Release) - Stuck chopping vegetables in a Delhi food stall, Sidhu (Akshay Kumar) consults astrologers and fakirs in the hope they will help him find a better life. He sees his chance when two Chinese strangers arrive to tell him that he is the reincarnation of a powerful warrior from their village. Thanks to the machinations of a devious translator, Sidhu thinks he is going to China to live like a king, when in fact he is being taken there to fight a vicious smuggler. Directed by Nikhil Advani, this action-adventure comedy stars Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Mithun Chakraborty, Ranvir Shorey, Gordon Liu and Roger Yuan. Note: This movie is presented in Hindi/Chinese with English subtitles.
