Hoping to catch a movie this week? Here is a list of new movies opening in San Diego on Friday, October 10, 2008:
Body of Lies - Political thriller based on Washington Post columnist David Ignatius’ novel about a CIA operative who uncovers a lead on a major terrorist leader suspected to be operating out of Jordan. Body of Lies stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe and is directed by acclaimed director Ridley Scott (American Gangster, Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner, G.I. Jane, Black Hawk Down).
Quarantine - A television reporter and her cameraman are assigned to spend the night shift with a Los Angeles Fire Station. A routine 911 call takes them to a small apartment building and they soon learn that a woman living in the building has been infected by something unknown. Under a CDC quarantine, phones, internet, televisions and cell phone access are cut-off, and officials are not relaying information to those locked inside. When the quarantine is finally lifted, the only evidence of what took place is the news crew’s videotape. Jennifer Carpenter and Steve Harris star.
City of Ember - For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing underground world of glittering lights. Built as a refuge for humanity and powered by a massive generator, this City will only sustain for 200 years. Now Ember’s once powerful generator is failing…and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker and fade. As blackouts in the City become more frequent, two teenagers in a race against time, search Ember for clues that will unlock the ancient mystery of the City’s existence, and help the citizens escape before the lights go out forever. This fantasy-adventure film stars Saoirse Ronan, Henry Treadaway, Bill Murray, Tim Robbins and Martin Landau.
The Express - Drama based on the life of college football hero Ernie Davis, the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. Refusing to play by the unspoken racist rules of the day, Davis broke through one barrier after another to alter the way fans looked at men of his color, joining the ranks of black pioneers who inspired a movement that smashed barriers on and off the playing field. Dennis Quaid and Rob Brown star.
The Duchess (Expands) - Long before the concept existed, the Duchess of Devonshire, Georgiana Spencer, was the original “It Girl.” Like her direct descendant Princess Diana, she was ravishing, glamorous and adored by an entire country. Determined to be a player in the wider affairs of the world, she proved that she could out-gamble, out-drink and outwit most of the aristocratic men who surrounded her. She helped usher in sweeping changes to England as a leader of the forward-thinking Whig Party. But even as her power and popularity grew, she was haunted by the fact that the only man in England she seemingly could not seduce was her very own husband, the Duke. And when she tried to find her own way to be true to her heart and loyal to her duty, the resulting controversies and convoluted liaisons would leave all of London talking. This romantic drama, full of beautiful period costumes stars Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes.
