Hoping to catch a movie this week? Here is a list of new movies opening in San Diego on Friday, September 26, 2008:
Eagle Eye – Two strangers are thrown together by a mysterious phone call in this action thriller. Threatening their lives and family, the phone caller pushes the main characters into a series of increasingly dangerous situations – using the technology of everyday life to track and control their every move. As the situation escalates, these two ordinary people become the country’s most wanted fugitives, who must work together to discover what is really happening – and more importantly, why. Eagle Eye is the brainchild of Steven Spielberg and stars Shia LaBoeuf and Michelle Monaghan.
Eagle Eye: The IMAX Experience - Experience this Action-Aventure thriller (see above) starring Shia LaBoeuf and Michelle Monaghan in IMAX.
Nights in Rodanthe - Two unhappy people’s lives become entwined when they have a life changing romance. Adrienne is a woman who’s trying to decide whether to stay in her unhappy marriage or not. Her life changes when Paul, a doctor who is traveling to reconcile with his estranged son, checks into an inn in a North Carolina beach town where she is staying. This romantic drama stars Richard Gere and Diane Lane.
Fireproof – A heroic firefighter in a failing marriage takes up his father’s challenge to be part of a 40-day experiment designed to teach both husband and wife the real meaning of commitment. Kirk Cameron and Erin Bethea star in this drama about marriage and faith.
Rent Filmed Live on Broadway (Opens Wednesday, September 24, 2008) – Catch a rare look into the Broadway production of Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical and one of the longest running shows on Broadway. Set in New York City’s gritty East Village, the revolutionary rock opera RENT tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling to live and pay their rent. “Measuring their lives in love,” these starving artists strive for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic.
Miracle at St. Anna – Inspired by the August 1944 Sant’Anna di Stazzema massacre, Miracle at St. Anna is the story of four black American soldiers who are members of the US Army as part of the all-black 92nd “Buffalo Soldier” Division stationed in Tuscany, Italy during World War II. They experience the tragedy and triumph of the war as they find themselves trapped behind enemy lines and separated from their unit after one of them risks his life to save an Italian boy. This war drama is directed by Spike Lee.
The Lucky Ones – After suffering an injury during a routine patrol in Iraq, hardened sergeant TK Poole is granted a one month leave to visit his fiance. But when an unexpected blackout cancels all flights out of New York, TK agrees to share a ride to Pittsburgh with two similarly stranded servicemen. What begins as a short trip unexpectedly evolves into a longer journey during which the trio discover that home is not quite what they remembered, and that the unlikely companionship they’ve found might be what matters the most. Rachel McAdams, Tim Robbins and Michael Pena star in this “road trip” film.
Choke – A sex-addicted con-man pays for his mother’s hospital bills by playing on the sympathies of those who rescue him from choking to death. An adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel, Choke is the sardonic story about mother and son relationship, fear of aging, sexual addiction, and the dark side of historical theme parks. This dark comedy stars Sam Rockwell, Anjelica Huston, Kelly MacDonald, Brad Henke, and Clark Gregg (who also directs).
Towelhead – This coming of age film follows the dark, bold and shockingly funny life of Jasira, a 13 year old Arab-American girl, as she navigates the confusing and frightening path of adolescence and her own sexual awakening. Jasira must confront racism and hypocrisy at home and at school – and at the same time struggle to make sense of her raging hormones and newfound sexuality. Summer Bishil, Peter Macdissi, Aaron Eckhart, Toni Collette, Maria Bello, Eugene Jones and Chase Ellison star.
