Gaslamp Quarter : Historic Balboa Theatre
January 12th, 2008
After being dark for over 20 years, the Historic Balboa Theatre reopens its doors to the public this month.
Built in 1924, the historic Balboa Theatre was originally an elegant vaudeville and movie palace. In 1934, the Theatre featured contemporary films from Mexico City and introduced Latin stars to San Diego audiences. During World War II, the Theatre’s office space was used by the US Navy as bachelor quarters for young men waiting to ship out. After the War, the remodeled spaces became single occupancy housing.
And now, in 2008, the Balboa Theatre returns to claim its rightful place on the San Diego performing arts scene. The City of San Diego’s $26 million renovation and restoration efforts honors the Balboa Theatre’s historic roots while seamlessly incorporating state-of-the-art amenities, ensuring that the Balboa Theatre will be a San Diego treasure for generations to come.
To celebrate its opening, the Balboa Theatre is hosting four public preview showcases featuring local performing arts groups, on January 12 and 13, 2008. This will provide the public a unique opportunity to experience first hand all that the Balboa Theatre has to offer.
Editor’s Note: All of the tickets to the free preview performances have been issued, and are no longer available. If you do not have a ticket, you are invited to line up outside the Theatre before the show: although priority will be given to ticket holders, people from the stand-by line will be invited to fill the remaining, unclaimed seats.
The Balboa Theatre is located in the heart of San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, at 1100 3rd Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Visit the Theatre website for event and ticket information.
