San Diego : Charger Girl Auditions
February 27th, 2007
The San Diego Chargers football team (as if they need an introduction!) will be holding auditions for cheerleaders at the end of March. Charger Girls gain local and national notoriety as they perform in front of over 70,000 fans, participate in an annual swimsuit calendar photo shoot and serve as ambassadors for the Chargers organization as well as the San Diego community.
Interested in trying out for the “hottest dance team in the NFL”? Here’s what you need to know: to be eligible to apply, you must be at least 18 years old by the date of the preliminary audition; you must commit to a full year of twice-weekly rehearsals, games and public appearances during and prior to the season; you must attend a mandatory weekend mini-camp; and you must have a means of transportation.
To apply, fill out an application form and include a current photograph of yourself (5×7 or larger, head or full body shot, black & white or color) to the address provided on the website. Applications are being accepted now, and will be accepted up to and including the day of the preliminary auditions. Walk-in applications will be accepted at the door.
The preliminary auditions will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at the University of San Diego, Jenny Craig Pavilion. You should plan to arrive at 9:00 am. Applicants at the preliminary audition will be judged on dance ability, crowd appeal, showmanship and individual applications. 50 to 55 finalists will move on to the next round of auditions and will be invited back for an interview process and final dance audition.
Be sure to check out the Chargers website for more information about the application and audition processes (including a downloadable Application Form and answers to “Most Commonly Asked Questions”).

You need to be a pretty darn good dancer, performer, entertainer AND samaritan to make it as a Charger Girl, that’s for sure!
The Chargers refer to their squad of cheerleaders as “the hottest dance team in the NFL” and they expect their Girls to “uphold a high standard of quality dance performance.”
According to the Chargers website, one of the main things that you will be judged on at the preliminary audition is your dance ability, and they even go so far as to recommend that to prepare for your preliminary audition, you take as many dance classes as possible, in a variety of different dance styles (jazz, hip-hop, ballet, etc.) to really hone your technique and skills.
And don’t forget, you’ll be competing with members of the former squad as well, since everyone has to re-audition every year,
So, although dance skill isn’t the only thing they’re looking for, you do have to be a pretty good dancer to be a Charger Girl. I suggest you visit the Chargers website (see link in above post) and spend some time checking out the squad members. Each Girl has an individual page that gives you a brief bio and a video featuring that Girl – it will give you a good idea of what kind of dance moves might be expected of you.
Good Luck!
