San Diego : San Diego Bay Parade of Lights

December 5th, 2006

The Port of San Diego presents the 35th Annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights. For two consecutive Sunday evenings (December 10 & 17, 2006), the San Diego boating community decks out their water faring vessels – everything from kayaks to yachts – with lights and decorations and parades along the San Diego Bay. This year’s theme is Christmas…San Diego Style. Various “Best of” Awards are presented at the end of the event. The Parade of Lights kicks off with a fireworks display at 5:30 pm and the boats will begin their procession immediately thereafter.

For best viewing, boaters are encouraged to station themselves where the parade route turns for Coronado, near the 10th Street Terminal. For those viewing from land, Harbor Island and the park behind Seaport Village are popular spots; the north and south ends of the Embarcadero as well as the pathway along Coronado are also good spots and tend to be less crowded. Seen by over 80,000 people, parking during the Parade of Lights is always hard to come by, so make sure to factor that in to your overall commute time.

The parade takes approximately 1 to 1 ½ hours to pass any given point along the parade route, with approximate arrival times along the route as follows: Shelter Island (start of parade) – 5:30 pm; Harbor Island – 6:00 pm; The Embarcadero – 6:30 pm; Seaport Village – 7:00 pm; and the Ferry Landing on Coronado – 7:30 pm.

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights will be held Sunday December 10 and 17, 2006, beginning at 5:30 pm with a fireworks display and ending at approximately 9:00 pm.
