Halloween : Visit America’s Most Haunted House – If You Dare…

October 31st, 2006

Recognized by the State of California as an Official Haunted House, the historic Whaley House in Old Town is notorious for its ghostly inhabitants.

Built in 1857 by Thomas Whaley, in addition to serving as the Whaley family residence, portions of the house served as the County Court House, a commercial Theater and polling place. Thomas Whaley’s General Store (and various other Whaley businesses) was also part of the Whaley House.

Named the number one most haunted house in the United States by the Travel Channel’s America’s Most Haunted television show, documented instances of ghost sightings at the Whaley House abound – apparitions and unexplained noises, billowing curtains and wide open windows in empty rooms, scents of cigar and perfume – all have been experienced at the Whaley House.

The history of the Whaley House is full of tragedy and suffering – including a suicide, a hanging and the death of an infant. Mr. Whaley himself was very passionate about his home and is said to have continued to linger in the house long after his death.

The Whaley House will be holding special Halloween Night tours on October 31, 2006 from 5:00 to midnight. While touring through the house, visitors will be able to hear chilling tales of the ghosts who roam the house and enjoy period music played by the docents. Drop in if you dare – you never know who (or what) else may be haunting the halls tonight.

The Whaley House is located at 2476 San Diego Avenue in San Diego’s Old Town district. Tour tickets are $15.00. For more information about the Halloween Night tours, visit the Whaley House website. You will also find information about the ghosts that inhabit the Whaley House on their website and on the San Diego Ghosts website.
