Random Restaurant Review: Spice Thai Cafe

In the middle of a small plaza in Carmel Valley lies a small, unassuming Thai restaurant called Spices. But don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the exterior – this place packs a punch!

Spices is one of the best Thai restaurants in San Diego, if not the best Thai restaurant in San Diego. The friendly, accommodating staff is always happy to see you and the food is simply delicious. We have been frequenting this restaurant almost once a week (usually on the weekend) for nearly a decade, and cannot rave enough about this place. Our personal favorites are the Panang Curry and the Phad Thai Noodles.

Each dish at Spices can be customized to suit your tolerance for spice – you can ask that your dish be prepared based on a spicy scale from 1 (mild) to 10 (off the map spicy). For those who like just a little bit of a kick, we suggest you start at level 3 or 4 and work your way up (or down) from there. Each curry, noodle and rice dish at Spices is made to order and can be prepared vegetarian, with or without tofu. For the non-vegetarians, your meal can be prepared with your choice of chicken, bar-be-que pork, roast duck, calamari, shrimp, fish or scallops.

If you’re looking for a great deal, we recommend the lunch specials, which are served daily (including weekends) from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Served with soup, salad, two appetizers and a generously portioned main dish, the lunch specials cannot be beat.

Looking for the perfect drink to accompany your meal? Try the Thai Iced Tea or the Thai Beer (Singha). The coolness of these refreshing drinks is the perfect complement to the hot, spicy entrees. And no meal is complete without the sticky rice and mango – try it for yourself!

Spices Thai Cafe is located at 3810 Valley Centre Drive in Carmel Valley in the Piazza Carmel Shopping Center. There are two additional locations, at 16441 Bernardo Center Drive in Rancho Bernardo and 6785 Mira Mesa Boulevard in Mira Mesa.

I am a vegetarian who has been eating at Spices for sometime. I finally gave up after I have had fish sauce in my food numerous tmes after specifically requesting “no fish sauce”. Near the end of my soup this evening, I discovered dozens of pieces of chicken in my “vegetarian” order. Not a safe vegi/vegan place. They don’t seem to understand the definition.

Sorry to hear about your experiences. As a fellow vegetarian, I can tell you that I haven’t had any problems in the past (we usually go to the Carmel Valley location). But, I guess the moral of your story is that one can never be too careful or vigilant!

Please let us know if you find a good thai restaurant that’s more veggie/vegan friendly – we’re always on the lookout!
