San Diego’s Little Italy Street Festivals

October 5th, 2006

Downtown San Diego’s Little Italy District comes alive this weekend (October 7-8, 2006) with its annual Festa (street festival) and Chalk La Strada Festival (street painting festival). Both Festivals will be held on India Street between Ash and Grape Streets from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The weekend will include Italian food, craft and art booths, live entertainment, street painting, an Italian Motorsport show, a stickball exhibition game, a children’s activity area and beer and wine gardens. The Lincoln Savor the Dream tour will also be featured, which will provide attendees the opportunity to not only test drive cars from Lincoln’s 2007 line, but also to test out signature dishes prepared by top gourmet chefs.

The Corsi delgi Artisti (Street of Artists), which is held in conjunction with the Festa, features more than 100 Madonnaris (street painters) who will create masterpieces in chalk on the streets of Little Italy. Children who wish to try their hand at street art can purchase a starter chalk kit and a dedicated square of asphalt at the Festival.

The program for Saturday includes the street art festival, Chef Rocco Dispirito (at the Lincoln Savour the Dream tour) and entertainment on 1 stage. There will be no vendors on Saturday.

Sunday’s program includes over 150 food, craft and art vendors, Chef Michael Rubino of the Napa Valley Grille (at the Lincoln Savor the Dream tour), entertainment on 3 stages, the street art festival, the Italian Motorsport show, a stickball exhibition game and 2 beer and wine gardens.

Please be sure to check the Festa website for more information about the event and entertainment schedule.

Both Festivals are extremely popular and are expected to attract close to 100,000 people. The most prudent way of getting to Little Italy this weekend is by Trolley. Event parking will also be available at the County Administration Building parking lot (3 blocks away) and at the 610 W. Ash Street parking lot (1 block away) for $7.00. A free shuttle service will be available between the County Administration Lot and the Festival site.

Editor’s Note: Dessert aficionados, get your fix at Little Italy’s Extraordinary Desserts, located right around the corner from the Festival.
