Soaking It In At Swami’s in Encinitas
September 20th, 2006

When cruising up the 101, it’s difficult not to notice the gold palatial structure which marks your entrance into Encinitas. Welcome to the Self-Realization Fellowship Ashram Center‘s Hermitage and Meditation Gardens.
Affectionately referred to by the locals as “Swami’s”, the Self-Realization Fellowship was built for Swami Paramahansa Yogananda in 1937 and is where he authored Autobiography of a Yogi.
The meditation gardens are located within the hermitage and include waterfalls and koi ponds. From the moment you enter the ashram, you are transported into a different, serene world. There are many nooks with benches throughout the gardens where one can sit back and reflect. At the top of the garden on an ornately sculptured bench, you can watch the surfers below at Swami’s Beach, surfing away on what is known as some of the most zen waves in all of San Diego.
Swami’s is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free.
